Gifts show we care and trust each other – this old saying says so! When giving meaningful presents to friends or loved ones, gifts become more than tokens of affection; they strengthen bonds and increase intimacy. From giving your bestie something personalized after they break one to giving siblings new throw pillows to match their living room palette, meaningful presents demonstrate our shared humanity and intimacy.
Research also indicates that gift-giving reduces our stress levels, in large part thanks to dopamine being released by our brains when giving.
Gifts with little meaning for their recipients may actually have negative repercussions for them and their wellbeing. That’s because we attach symbolic meaning to things we purchase, so an inconsiderate or inappropriate present could be seen as thoughtless or thoughtless by recipients.
But, how can we increase the odds that our gifts are appreciated? A great place to begin is considering their interests and hobbies – for example if someone in your list loves music consider getting them a playlist or compilation; book subscriptions or concert tickets also make wonderful presents that show our thoughtfulness.
Consider carefully what kind of present you’re giving. Experiences such as dining out or taking a trip are often much appreciated and appreciated more than material items; similarly, personalized photo albums or journals make great ways to connect with friends and family members.
Always bear in mind that God intends for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit to serve His church and evangelize its members – this means your gifts can help strengthen and evangelise others around you.
Teaching (the ability to clearly convey and explain God’s word), helping (an outward manifestation of humility and servanthood) and preaching/preaching/ministering (interpreting Scripture to strengthen and empower churches).
By giving thoughtful gifts to those you care for, you can encourage them to give back to their community – creating a happier and harmonious society as a result. So go ahead and treat your friends and family to one or more unexpected presents; you might just be amazed at how much joy this brings them!
